Complaint
Both articles described Koneru Humpy, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s Indian Sportswoman of the Year, as the youngest ever chess grandmaster. A reader complained that this was incorrect.Β The ECU considered the matter in the light of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s standards of due accuracy.
Outcome
Ms Humpy is the youngest ever female grandmaster, but the youngest ever grandmaster is male, and the articles were materially inaccurate in this respect.Β The error was acknowledged in the initial reply to the complainant, and the first article was corrected seven days after it was published.Β However, the information was not passed to the editorial team in India responsible for the second article, which reproduced the error.Β That error was also subsequently corrected, but in neither case was a note acknowledging the correction added to the article.Β The ECU concluded the action taken, though appropriate as far as it went, was not enough to resolve the issue of complaint.
