Complaint

A viewer complained that a contributor who said β€œit is a fact that solar and wind provide the cheapest electricity in the UK” was incorrect.Β  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ’s editorial standards of accuracy.

Outcome

The ECU noted that the most recent report from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates that, on the basis of levelised cost, the cost per MWh of electricity from new electricity-generating projects (expressed in 2021 prices) is consistently lower for renewables than for fossil fuels.Β  Although levelised cost is not the only way of calculating the cost of energy generation, it is widely accepted as a measure across the industry, and the contributor’s statement was accurate according to that measure at the time of broadcast.
