California surfing competition told to let transgender woman compete, bbc.co.uk

Complaint

This online article reported the decision by the California Coastal Commission that the proposal to prevent a trans woman from competing in the women’s section of a surfing competition would be in breach of state law.Β  In explaining background to the story the article said the surfer, who was Australian, had β€œcontributed to the development of new guidelines adopted by Australia’s national governing body allowing transgender women surfers to compete in women’s events”. Β A reader complained that this was inaccurate at the time of publication, and that a correction had been made only after she had pointed out the inaccuracy to the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ twice. Β The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ’s editorial standards of accuracy. Β

Outcome

The ECU accepted that the original version of the article gave an inaccurate impression because the Australian rules had by then been changed in a way which restricted trans women’s access to women’s events.Β  By the time the complaint reached the ECU the article had been emended to reflect that situation and a note explaining the reason for the emendation had been added.Β  While acknowledging action could have been taken sooner, the ECU considered enough had been done to resolve the issue of complaint.
