PET shows you a world of new possibilities”: Dalton’s story
Our Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 Appeal told the story of Dalton. After being bullied at school and falling behind, Dalton fell in with the wrong crowd and ended up in prison. Feeling trapped and disillusioned with the education system, Dalton found solace in the prison library where he discovered Prisoners’ Education Trust. Dalton was awarded funding to study an Arts & Language course, a course which ignited Dalton’s self-belief and passion for learning.
Thanks to the generosity of Radio 4 listeners we raised £20,724 as a direct response to the appeal. 11 new supporters started regular gifts to PET, and people got in touch to ask if they could volunteer. In addition, since the start of the year we have also received more donations via our website. We strongly believe this is a result of our Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 Appeal and donations we would not have otherwise received. We are extremely grateful to have received such amazing support from the public.
Prisoners’ Education Trust was able to support Dalton in his time of need. Following his release, I am happy to report that Dalton has since enrolled at university and has aspirations of studying a BA Sociology degree this autumn. He has also been championing the power of education and the life changing impact it had on him during his sentence in a recent Metro article. Dalton is now running a theatre company to tell his story through poetry. StandFast Productions which is a fledgling theatre company with dreams including staging shows in prisons and taking their High Risk play to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
We would like to say a really big thank you to everyone who gave so generously to support our appeal. Thanks to your donations we will be able to support more students like Dalton, to embark on their educational journeys. Our work simply wouldn’t be possible with your support, so thank you!
