Heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to the appeal! The donations from our Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 appeal will help us carry on delivering this truly life-changing work and let children like Bakr know there is someone who cares – no matter how far away.
Thanks to the generous support of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 listeners, Humanity & Inclusion (the new name of Handicap International) raised £22,595 to continue our vital work, including providing care to children injured by conflict.
Every day, on average, 90 civilians are reported killed or wounded in bombings and by shelling around the world. The indiscriminate bombing means that many innocent people will be left with terrible, life-changing injuries.
Children like Bakr, 9 from Mosul whose story was shared in our Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔR4 appeal. Bakr lost both of his legs in a bombing while he was playing with friends near his home. Humanity & Inclusion’s teams help children like Baker recover both physically – working to minimise the impact of often horrific injuries, and psychologically – dealing with the trauma of suffering, fear and isolation.
It is because of a child like Bakr that our organisation started in 1982. Two doctors working in Cambodian refugee camps in Thailand came across many children injured whilst crossing the heavily mined border. Humanity & Inclusion was born and our first orthopaedic centres were opened.
Today, we work in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster in 55 countries worldwide. We support disabled and vulnerable people of all ages and with a wide range of impairments, making sure that help gets to those who need it most.
