Thank you so much to all Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 listeners who gave to the Appeal. Because of you, more children here in Ethiopia who have been held in domestic slavery, forced into the sex trade or targeted by traffickers while living alone on the streets will get trauma-informed support – we will get them back to family-based care, and provide long-term follow-up services.
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 Appeal raised £39,146 for Hope for Justice. Funds will be used towards our Lighthouse Programme in Ethiopia over a period of 12 months.
Almost 16 million children from the ages of 5 to 17 are engaged in child labour in Ethiopia. Many children, especially girls end up as domestic workers and are then trafficked in commercial sex work. In a study by the Population Council (2018) of 2,000 female sex workers in Addis Ababa, as many as 44% were ex-domestic workers.
Hope for Justice’s Lighthouse programme provides holistic, comprehensive support to increase capability and give opportunities to trafficked girls so they can achieve economic stability and self-sufficiency. Located in Addis Ababa, our “Lydia” Lighthouse is for female victims of trafficking (aged from 1-18 years), offering a 12-week stabilisation period and can house up to 25 girls at any one time. This is a safe place where girls can access holistic care as they work to overcome their trauma, and restore their lives.
Our goal is to restore the lives of girl survivors of human trafficking. Thanks to your donations we will be able to do this through providing shelter and health screening for conditions such as HIV/AIDS and Covid-19. We will also be able to support their mental and physical health and build economic stability for girls through catch-up education, life skills and vocational training. Finally we will work to reintegrate girls with their families or into family-based care, depending on their individual circumstances.
