Farm Africa

Radio 4 Appeal 15 October 2017

I’ve supported Farm Africa for 20 years, and what I like is that Farm Africa do not impose solutions on people. They consult with local people, find out local conditions and how they work, they respect traditional methods of farming.

Farm Africa extends thanks to Radio 4 listeners, who together generously gave £21,935 to our appeal. Thanks to match funding from UK aid, these donations will be doubled by the Government, meaning gifts will go twice as far.

Farm Africa is an innovative charity that reduces poverty by growing agriculture, protecting the environment and developing businesses in rural eastern Africa.

The funds raised will be used to expand Farm Africa’s Growing Futures project in western Kenya, which helps young women and men increase their incomes by growing and selling vegetables that are in high demand, such as mangetouts, French beans and chillies.

The donations will enable us to give high-quality seeds and agricultural and business training to project participants and support them in working with other young farmers so they can sell their crops in bulk for higher prices.

The new phase of the project supported by Radio 4 listeners will start in the county of Elgeyo Marakwet in April 2018, helping a new generation of farmers develop the entrepreneurial skills they need to make a decent profit not just this harvest, but every harvest.
