Child Rescue Nepal

Radio 4 Appeal 9 April 2017

Child Rescue Nepal is so grateful to Radio 4 Listeners for helping us to save these extremely vulnerable children

Radio 4’s listeners gave very generously to our appeal in April and raised £30,858. This fund enabled us to go ahead and plan our next rescue.

Child Rescue Nepal frees children from slavery and keeps them safe. In Nepal we estimate that there are almost 100,000 children working in hazardous situations. These children are extremely vulnerable and suffer frequent physical and emotional abuse. Sexual abuse is also common.

In August 2017 we were asked by local police and the District Child Welfare Board to rescue seven young boys who were working in an illegal metal factory in Kathmandu. The boys were sleeping on the floor and were not allowed contact with their families. One of the boys told us that he was forced to work from 4am to 9pm, and got so tired that he had to deliberately burn himself to stay awake.

We are currently keeping these boys safe and carrying out family assessments to see if they are able to return home. If they cannot safely return home we will care for them in one of our small family-style homes, which costs £36 per week per child.

We hope in time that these boys will return to school to continue their education. Thank you to all who gave to our appeal and enabled this rescue to take place.
