Marie Curie, an end of life charity, provides nursing care in people’s homes and in our hospices for people living with a terminal illness as well as a free support line and a wealth of information and support on all aspects of dying, death and bereavement.
We were thrilled to be chosen as a Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Lifeline Appeal charity for the first time in our 75-year history, raising over £14,000 from our appeal which aired in March 2023. We are hugely grateful to everyone who was inspired to donate to support our work.
One of our Appeal film contributors was John Atkins and his daughter Maggie from Liverpool. John spoke about the death of his wife, Ros, and how Marie Curie supported her at the end of her life at the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool. "The hospice doesn't feel like a grim place, it's a place full of love” said John “Ros said: 'I feel happy here and I'm glad we've come here'."
Both John and Maggie were also supported through weekly bereavement counselling from Marie Curie. John describes Maggie going to her counselling: “We take little bars of chocolate - one for Maggie and one for Rachel (Maggie’s bereavement counsellor) - as a little treat and she gets spoilt rotten in there. Staff come out with cake for her. They're all lovely and they make a fuss over her. She wears a Marie Curie daffodil every day on her school cardigan. I've got one on my coat as well.”
The money raised by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Lifeline Appeal will help families like John and Maggie’s, making an incredible difference to families affected by terminal illness and those who are grieving the death of a loved one.
