Performing arts activities for kids

Encourage your little ones to express themselves with these fun performing arts activities. Putting on a show for friends and family can be a great way to build confidence, although an audience isn't essential! Putting on a show can also help little ones to expend energy and stave off boredom.

1. Put on a puppet show

You can help your little ones to make a super simple sock puppet. Once they've made their very own puppet, check out puppeteer Julia's top tips for putting on a puppet show.

2. Get dancing!

Dance is great way for children to express themselves through movement. Let's GoersÌýMax and Luca have some handy top tips for ballet for beginners. The Let's Go Club has lots of cool dance moves for little ones to learn. Kids can join in with this step-by-step guide to the club dance, or make up their very own dance routines for their favourite songs.

Pro-tip: Try copying your child's dance moves. They'll love it, and mirroring what they do is a great self-esteem builder!

3. Make some music

As soon as children can hold something that makes a noise, they can make music! Little ones can use something like these super simple rainbow shakers to play along with their favourite songs. Keeping time to a beat introduces the idea of rhythm and pattern, which in turn helps to develop children’s reasoning and problem-solving skills.

4. Tell a story through mime

Mime is a great way of getting children to act out a story using movement instead of speech. You can even use mime to make a guessing game. Watch the video above to see master of mime Les Bubb demonstrate how to mime a solid wall.

5. Unleash their superpowers!

Little ones love pretending to be superheroes. Encourage them to act out their superhero adventures. What's their superhero name? What superpowers do they have, and how do they use them to save the day? You could help them to make their own costumes and, with a few simple props, they can even recreate this super cool superhero quick trick.
