Five ideas for outdoor family fun
Watch the children from Our Family having exciting outdoor adventures and follow our top tips for getting active in the open air.
1. Scoot for the stars
Scooting is a fun way for little ones to get active, improve their balance and develop a sense of independence. Start by practising in a park or garden and work up to longer journeys. Older children could even scoot to school. Follow our top tips for safer scooting.
2. Have an outdoor adventure
Clambering, climbing and challenging yourself in the garden or at the park is fantastic for children’s physical development and self-esteem, but did you know that playing outdoors can also help build communication skills? Research shows that children use five times as many words when they play outside compared to indoors.
3. Go fly a kite
Children love a bit of a mission, and going to fly a kite could be a great way to add a bit of focus to your trip to the park or the beach. Boost your little one’s communication skills by encouraging them to use their senses and tell you how the kite looks, feels and sounds as it flies.
4. Get some pedal power
Once kids have mastered the basics of cycling, a family bike ride can be a real adventure. Involve older children in working out a route and deciding what to take with you. Still need some help getting roadworthy? Follow our top tips for teaching kids to cycle.
5. Take a hike
The key to keeping children engaged on a walk is giving them something to concentrate on apart from their tired feet! Combine your expedition with a minibeast hunt, collect treasures such as stones, leaves or sticks or stop for a game of Pooh Sticks along the way to keep things interesting.
