Make a Chocolate Shelley-bration cake

Celebrate Shelley’s amazing 15 years on Blue Peter with this super cake, you could even throw a Shelley themed party, we did!

You will need
  • 175g margarine
  • 175g sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 125g self-raising sugar
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • Small oven safe bowl to make shell shape
  • 300ml double cream
  • 250g dark chocolate
  • Marshmallows (for Shelley’s arms)
  • Chocolate teacake (for Shelley’s head)
  • Chocolate buttons (for Shelley’s shell)
  • Chocolate chips (for Shelley’s eyes)
  • Melted chocolate for sticking on Shelley’s arms, legs and head

Step 1 - The cake

In a large bowl, mix the margarine with the sugar, until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs and mix well.

Sieve self-raising flour and cocoa powder into the bowl and fold into the mixture.

Step 2 - The bake

Grease your oven safe small bowl, this will stop the mixture sticking once the cake is baked. Place the bowl in the oven carefully and bake for 1 hour.

Step 3 - The ganache

While the cake is in the oven, break the dark chocolate into pieces and add to the bowl.

In a pan heat your double cream gently until it starts to simmer.

Hobs can be dangerous, so grab a grown-up to help if you need!

Ask a grown-up to help you pour the hot cream into the bowl with the chocolate in and wait a few minutes – this will allow the cream to cool a bit while starting to melt the chocolate. Carefully mix until all the chocolate and the cream have combined – delicious!

Step 4 - The base

Once the cake is baked carefully remove from the oven and allow it to cool completely in the bowl.

Once cool, remove the cake from the bowl and place on a wire rack.

The bottom needs to be flat, so grab a grown-up to slice the top off the cake to make a nice even surface.

Use some melted chocolate to stick on some marshmallows for Shelley’s arms and legs. Attach the teacake to make Shelley’s head. Leave to set.

Step 5 - Decorate

Next pour your ganache all over Shelley. Leave the ganache to cool for 5 minutes and then use the end of a teaspoon to create Shelley’s shell markings.

Now it’s time to get creative, you can decorate the shell as much as you like. We used chocolate buttons to decorate the shell and chocolate chips for Shelley’s eyes.
