Are you a fruit and veggie master?

Prepare to take a journey through the year and choose some of the best fruits and vegetables grown in the UK to eat each season...

When it comes to fruit and veggies, it's really easy to go to a supermarket and buy whatever takes your fancy, right?

If you want to carve a pumpkin in the middle of summer...why not? If you want strawberries at Christmas, go ahead!

However, have you ever thought - hang on a minute - don't pumpkins grow in autumn in time for Halloween? Or, don't strawberries only grow in summer?

We grow loads of amazing fruit and vegetables at different times of the year. But if we choose to eat something out of season (when it doesn't grow in the UK) the chances are it has been flown miles and miles from another country before it reaches our supermarkets. Sometimes our food comes from as far away as Australia!

Flying food in from different countries around the world might help to give us more variety to choose from, but it can also be harmful to the environment. This is due to something called 'carbon footprint'. The further away your fruit and veg comes from, the higher the carbon footprint, and the more carbon dioxide is released into the air which is bad for the environment.

To help protect the environment, we all need to reduce our carbon footprint as much possible and one easy way to do this is to choose fruit and vegetables grown in the UK at the time of year they're at their tastiest! This is sometimes called 'eating the seasons.'

BUT you can't start to 'eat the seasons' if you don't know your lettuce from your cabbage or you can't tell the difference between a broccoli and a cauliflower, right?

So if you want to know when to pick out the perfect peas...or the best time of year for amazing apples, take the quiz, learn how you can help protect the environment AND become the BEST Climate Hero you can be!
