Big Manny’s spooky science to try at home

Make a SPOOKtacular bubbling cauldron at home powered by the magic of science. You may not have a cauldron in your kitchen cupboard, but a bowl or mug will look just as effective. Let Big Manny show you how to make a cool DIY science project at home with a few everyday items.

How to make a bubbling science experiment 🧪

Start by adding equal amounts of vinegar and washing up liquid to your cauldron, or whatever vessel you are using for the experiment. Add a few drops of food colouring if you have it, this will make the potion look super cool and spooky, but not essential for the science. Give it a good stir.

Next, add some bicarbonate of soda and mix it up!

You’ll start to see foam and bubbles rising up and out of the cauldron like an incredible potion about to cause some mayhem.

🚨 Please wear protective clothing and cover any surfaces when using food colouring, as it may stain. Do not eat or drink the potion, it’s just for fun🚨

Tell us about the science Big Manny!

Bicarbonate of soda is an alkali and vinegar an acid. When the two meet they cause a FAST chemical reaction releasing carbon dioxide.

The washing up liquid traps the carbon dioxide gas and this creates foamy bubbles. And looks lit as well! 🫧
