Blue Peter Badges Privacy Notice

Your trust is very important to us. This means the 鶹Լ is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal data. It is important that you read this notice so that you are aware of how and why we are using such personal data. This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal data about you during and after your relationship with us, in accordance with data protection law.

Why are we doing this and how can you participate?

The 鶹Լ is giving children between the ages 5-15 the chance to be awarded a Blue Peter Badge and along with it, a Blue Peter Badge Card, to get free entry to many attractions across the UK. With their original Blue Peter Badges, they can also apply for ‘Silver’, ‘Gold’, ‘Green’, ‘Purple Fan’, ‘Sport’, ‘Music’ and ‘Book’ badges.

Depending on the kind of badge they apply for, we will ask different things to be sent. For example, for a ‘Green’ Blue Peter badge we’ll ask the children to send something to do with the environment.

The children can apply for a Blue Peter Badge from our website, or by writing to Blue Peter, MediaCityUK, Salford, M50 2BH.

If the child or their submission appear on our broadcast this may include the programme being available online and/or on demand and may be used again in a future broadcast. The child or their submission may also be used for promotional purposes on the 鶹Լ’s social media channels.

What personal data will the 鶹Լ collect?

The 鶹Լ will collect and process the following personal data about your child:

  • Full name

  • Age

  • Date of birth

  • 鶹Լ address

Depending on the type of Blue Peter Badge your child applies for, the 鶹Լ may collect:

  • Something written which explains why they should get a Blue Peter Badge

  • Answers to questions we might have

  • A photo or video of them

  • A drawing, story, or another thing they’ve created

The 鶹Լ will collect and process the following personal data about you (parent/guardian):

  • Full name

  • Email address

  • Phone number

The 鶹Լ may also process special category data depending on the content of your child’s submission to us. This might include for example:

  • Racial or ethnic origin

  • Religious or philosophical beliefs

  • Political opinions

  • Health information

Who is the Data Controller?

The 鶹Լ is the “Data Controller” of your personal data. This means that the 鶹Լ decides what your personal data is used for, and the ways in which it is processed. For the avoidance of doubt, your personal data will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. As the data controller, the 鶹Լ has the responsibility to comply, and to demonstrate compliance with, data protection law.

Lawful basis for processing your personal data

The lawful basis on which the 鶹Լ processes the personal data is the performance of its public task. The 鶹Լ’s role is to act in the public interest and to serve all audiences with content which informs, educates and entertains, and to reflect the United Kingdom and its cultures and values to the world.      

If the application includes any special category data, the 鶹Լ processes it on the lawful basis that processing is necessary for reasons of substantial public interest. These reasons are for the purposes of journalism because the 鶹Լ’s wider purposes is to produce the most creative, highest quality and distinctive output and services and to reflect, represent and serve the diverse communities of all the UK’s nations and regions. 

Sharing your personal data

The 鶹Լ works with our approved third-party providers who help us to provide some of our services. These partners only use your personal data on behalf of the 鶹Լ and not independently of the 鶹Լ.

We may share personal data with a third party where required or permitted by law.

Retaining your personal data

If your child applies for a Blue Peter Badge and are unsuccessful, we will retain their personal data, along with your contact details for 120 days before it will be deleted.

If your child receives a Blue Peter badge, we will retain their personal data on the ‘Blue Peter Badge Card System’ until they are 16 and a half years old.

If your child or their submission appears on 鶹Լ programming or 鶹Լ promotional content, this will be retained and archived in perpetuity by the 鶹Լ.

Your personal data will be stored in the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA).

Your rights and more information

You have rights under data protection law:

  • You can request a copy of the personal data 鶹Լ stores about you.

  • You have the right to request that we rectify any inaccurate or incomplete personal data that we hold about you.

  • You have the right to ask for the personal data we collect about you to be deleted, however there are limitations and exceptions to this right which may entitle the 鶹Լ to refuse your request.

  • In certain circumstances, you have the right to restrict the processing of your personal data or to object to the processing of your personal data.

  • You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal data to you or to another organisation, in certain circumstances.
