McFly's Harry Judd at Addenbrooke's

McFly's Harry Judd at Addenbrooke's

A McFly-ing visit

When we heard drummer Harry Judd was coming to Addenbrooke's Hospital to hand over some lovely lolly, we sent reporter Dorte Johansen along to be a McFly on the wall...

Teenage cancer - the facts

Every day six teenagers are diagnosed with cancer;

That's 2,000 new diagnoses each year;

The TCT has opened nine specialist teenage cancer units in NHS hospitals in the UK;

Each unit costs Β£2 million;

All of these costs need to raised by the TCT;

The TCT wants to open a further 14 units by 2014;

Addenbrooke's own unit will open at the end of 2009 and will provide special facilities for patients aged between 13 and 24.

McFly's Harry Judd's been drumming up support for the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) and has proved that he's not all pointy sticks and no action. Harry raised an impressive Β£12,500 running the London Marathon earlier this year - finishing in just 3 hours and 50 minutes - and that was with an injury!

And McFly, oh why, would he put himself through that? Well, when Harry was 12 (he still looks 12 to me!) one of his friends was treated for leukaemia at Addenbrooke's Hospital, so the development of a specialist teenage cancer unit there, and the work of the TCT is close to his heart.

Touring the proposed ward which his sponsorship money will help to design, Harry said: "I love meeting the patients. Every time, it just amazes me how brave they are.

"It just reiterates how important it is to get behind this charity because these guys are teenagers going through something so tough - but at the same time they need to grow up and BE teenagers - and feel like they're leading a normal life."

Addenbrooke's and the TCT have taken great care to involve some of the teenage cancer patients throughout the development process of this specialist unit, to ensure that it is exactly what young people want. As Harry puts it, it's not easy being a teenager at the best of times - it's a difficult stage - neither children, nor yet adults and as such, they have very specific needs and wants.

When Addenbrooke's teenage cancer unit is completed - at the end of 2009 - it will have ten beds and daytime facilities for outpatients. There are only nine such units in the UK and they cost Β£2 million each. Half of that money needs to be raised in this region, so Harry's marathon effort to raise Β£12,500 will make a real difference and will help to make this very special and much-needed unit a reality.
