Abolitionist, writer, businessman, former slave and resident of Soham, Olaudah Equiano or Gustavas Vassa, The African, is celebrated and remembered around the nation for his contributions to the abolition of slavery. But in no place is Equiano’s life and legacy held so dearly as in Soham, Cambridgeshire, where he set up home, married a local woman called Susanna Cullens, and had two daughters, Anna-Maria and Joanna. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Bicentenary of the Act to abolish the transatlantic slave trade in Britain, the Cambridge based, Heritage Lottery funded, Untold Stories project at Momentum Arts will be holding a special celebration.

Remembering Equiano will take place on Tuesday April 17, 2007 from 7:00pm until 9:45pm at St. Andrew’s Church in Soham, the very church in which Equiano was married on April 7th, 1792. The event will include a performance from local gospel singer Shean Williams, a re-enactment of Equiano’s wedding by the students of Soham Village College, and African drum and dance. There will also be the chance to hear readings from Untold Stories’ own publication Equiano’s Daughter, which follows the life and story of Equiano’s daughter Joanna Vassa.
