Sawtry Yellow proud as punch

By contributor Steve Furzeland
Hunts Mini Soccer 8B: 31/03/07 - Sawtry Yellow Sox 5 v 1 Alconbury Colts

On a couple of occasions so far this season the Yellow Sox have had to dig in deep to get a winning result.Ìý But none more so than their latest victory against a well organised Alconbury side.Ìý

Down to just five available players for the day, Yellow Sox played into a strong wind in the first period and went a goal behind in a league game for the first time time this season.Ìý

Then with midfielder Jack W taking a knock and needing some recovery time, a swap was made with the goalkeeper Freddie N to come out on the pitch.Ìý With Austin O'N in defence snuffing out Alconbury's chances, Sawtry had three chances to equalise, but were denied by three superb saves by the Alconbury goalkeeper.Ìý

After a pep talk at the interval and with the wind now behind them, Sawtry looked to be getting a stronger foothold in the contest and it took just one excellent pass from Rhys J to find top scorer Toby F with a shooting opportunity in front of goal.Ìý With time and space he drilled it into the corner to drag Sawtry level.

Inspired by this, Sawtry kept Alconbury on the back foot, and from the next attack a corner was forced.Ìý As it came across Toby F got the thinnest of contacts on the ball, but just enough to nudge it past the advancing goalkeeper.Ìý With two Alconbury defenders then trying to stop it crossing the line, its rolled painfully slowly to give the Yellow Sox a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period.

The boys were now determined to hold out, and pushed forward from the kick-off.Ìý A bouncing ball on the edge of the area was met on the volley by Rhys J and looped over the goalkeeper to give some breathing space at last.

With Austin O'N putting in a faultless performance in defence, dealing with most Alconbury attacks, a quick clearance allowed Rhys J to pick up a loose ball, and he went past the defender to finish neatly, and put Sawtry 4-1 in front with just a few minutes remaining.Ìý

The strong Alconbury team continued to battle hard, and a couple of goal-mouth scrambles nearly gave them a chance to get back into the game.Ìý Again a quick breakaway and a fine pass from Jack W presented Toby F his chance of a hat-trick and he duly completed a fine win with another clinical finish.

The five boys, Freddie, Austin, Jack, Rhys and Toby were all awarded Man of the Match, as it was a truly superb performance that leaves them on 11 wins out of 11 games in the league with one fixture remaining.
