Life through a lens: Jane Chesworth

Tell us YOUR West Yorkshire stories!

Do you live in Calderdale, Kirklees, Bradford or Wakefield? Do you think you have a story to tell which you'd like others to hear? Bradford-based Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ video journalist Jane Chesworth would LOVE to hear from you!

Jane is the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ West Yorkshire Website's Video Nation producer, in other words she's on the lookout for people who want to tell their stories in the form of a video diary which other people across the county - even across the world! - can look at.

Jodie dancing

Jodie in Featherstone: Video Diarist

Recent video diaries featured on bbc.co.uk/westyorkshire include:

  • Jonathan in Brighouse's video diary looking at how his life has changed since he discovered he has diabetes
  • Hebden Royd Rangers' video diary looking at their preparations ahead of a weekend in the great outdoors
  • Jodie in Featherstone's video diary looking at her life as a dance instructor - and how it's a demanding but enjoyable job!
  • Mark in Idle's video diary about his fish'n'chip shop, his regulars and life in general...

As you can see, there's a little bit of everything! And, best of all, you don't even have to provide your own camera equipment or know how to use it so that you can tell your own story. As Jane explains: "This is a great opportunity and you don't need to know how a camera works. All you need is to have an interesting story to tell!"

Got more questions about Video Nation? Hopefully, our Frequently Asked Questions - with some answers! - might help.

What's the point of Video Nation?

It's simple - to enable you to produce a short video for the web. Watch these highlights to see what other people have filmed. Video Nation reflects everyday life across the UK in all its rich diversity.

Who edits the tapes?

We do, but Video Nation hands over control to you. If you are unhappy about a finished video, you can suggest changes or choose not to have it shown. That way you are free to shoot first, decide later.

Jonathan

Jonathan in Brighouse: Video Diarist

I've never used a camcorder - does that matter?

No - and you don't have to be technically minded either. Your local production team will provide all the training and advice you need to film successfully.

What will happen to my recordings?

Your tape may be edited into a short video and shown on bbc.co.uk/westyorkshire, and may in turn be featured on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's national Video Nation website (bbc.co.uk/videonation), but only once you've agreed to the final version. If you change your mind about a video later on, we'll take it down as soon as possible. We use streaming technology, which means the videos can't be downloaded or kept by users. Videos are also sometimes shown on TV or the audio is used on the Radio, but we'll ask you beforehand and understand if you don't want it to be shown

What's in it for me?

It's an opportunity to share your views and experiences with others, to talk directly to both local and national audiences and to add your videos to the growing online archive of everyday life.
