Our Dolphin Friendly MEP

Mark Devenport | 21:09 UK time, Wednesday, 11 July 2007

I'm so used to documenting Jim Shannon's efforts to extend "countryside sports" to various breeds of our wildlife, that it seems a refreshing change to hear from our Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson. He wants to end the practice of "bass pair trawling" which he believes to be "responsible for thousands of dolphin and whale deaths every year". Britain has already banned this kind of fishing, but according to Jim Nicholson, there still isn't an effective European ban. "When an unacceptable number of intelligent mammals are being needlessly put to a painful and miserable death" the MEP argues "surely it is time to act."

If Jim Nicholson has taken an interest in mammals then it must be driven by self-interest. Without argument, Nicholson is the worst elected representative to have ever (dis)graced the local political stage. He’s dull-witted, uninspiring and ineffective and the most glaring example of why the UUP is in such a pitiful condition. Nothing could be more β€œpainful and miserable” for the endangered mammals than having the backing of the waste of space that is Jim Nicholson.

i never ceased to be amazed by Unionist politicians grasp of world events and caring for the big picture

When i was much younger in 1967 Stormont was in full swing and our local MP although representing one of the most deprived & gerrymandered areas of Northern Ireland (Strabane)
His sole objective was to ensure Aldergrove Airport (not even in his constituency) could accomodate the new generations Jumbo jets

Im so glad these guys dont get caught up in the small details

If intelligent mammals are in danger then Jim Nicholson is safe as houses.
