One thought in addition: a colleague of mine returned from teaching journalism in Bahrain last week. When the subject turned to American politics, his translator said: "Is it true that Barack Obama is Jewish?" Apparently it is something to do with "Barack" sounding like the Israeli name Barak. As for the Bush speech on Iraq: the real issue now is whether the US can maintain sufficient troop numbers into the future, in other words whether America can do what the president claims it is ready to do. The end of is fascinating.
