Contenders for Sports Personality

Post categories:

Carl Doran | 14:55 UK time, Thursday, 29 November 2007

As you may have already seen, Adrian Chiles announced the contenders for this year's award during the One Show on Friday.

I think it's an outstanding list with 10 sportsmen and women from across the UK and from seven very different sports.

The names on the shortlist are...

Joe Calzaghe, Lewis Hamilton, Ricky Hatton, Andy Murray, Christine Ohuruogu, Paula Radcliffe, Jason Robinson, Justin Rose, James Toseland and Jonny Wilkinson.

The were provided by a panel of over 30 leading sporting experts from a selection of newspaper sports editors (national and regional) and magazines.

A Sports Personality judging panel, including some of our distinguished former winners, also played a part.

There will be much debate over the next few days over who should win the coveted title, but we should have an extremely worthy winner.

I'm sure you will have your individual favourites from the shortlist and maybe you're disappointed that your own personal choice didn't make the final 10. It would be really good to hear your views.

Unlike other current sporting debates - such as who will manage the England and Scotland national football teams - only you, the public, will decide the Sports Personality winner with a live phone vote during the show on Sunday 9 December (1900-2100 GMT).

We'll also be handing out awards to the outstanding team, coach, young and overseas personalities, the Sports Unsung Hero, plus the very special Helen Rollason and Lifetime recipients.

All details for the for these awards are available on the Sports Personality website.

Preparations for the big night are well and truly in the final stages now and while I have no idea who will win the main award, I can promise you some of the biggest names in world sport will make an appearance and some great surprises are also in store.

I really hope you enjoy it!
