Oxegen Intake

Stuart Bailie.jpgI've just realised that tomorrow will be my eighth year at the Oxegen/Witnness festival. Every one, of them, to be exact. I've done a half-dozen Glastonburys, a load of Fleadhs and Feiles, a bunch of Phoenixes and too many soggy Readings to currently recall. I guess you could call me a veteran.

Although I tend to moan a bit, it's been a source of fun and vivid experiences. How many people have seen Bonnie Tyler being pelted with plastic cider bottles, filled with human urine? Isn't it a major life experience to have wallowed in the mud of Somerset, or to have camped in the middle of a hundred psycotic Scallies?

Well, the Belfast shops have all sold out of welly boots and my plastic poncho has been located. I will start moaning in a few hours, but for now, the anticipation is rather swell.

This years Oxegen was excellent! Though the campsites and ways to the main stages were so difficult to navigate due to the mud, it was an amazing experience with some truly great performances.

Top of my bill was Rodrigo Y Gabriela. The show that two people with guitars that sit there most of it is amazing to see, and must be recommended to hear any killer tunes such as Stairway to Heaven and Wish You Were Here.

Daft Punks light show was astounding, with serious bass beats filling your chest and really get you into the music. Another definite life altering moment seeing them live!

What little i saw of Muse was also amazing, the light show was amazing. And they left their favorite tunes towards the end! Great work from those lads too.

Apart from them i also liked Arcade of Fire and Delorentos in the Pet Sounds tent. Two to see again i think! The Kooks were pretty good too.

Fratellis were kind of dull. Chelsea Dagger was all i wanted to see and it was only ok. Same thing with the Goo Goo dolls with Iris, otherwise the crowds lost interest.

And then of course the few that i couldnt see... Queens of the Stone Age, Interpol, Brian Wilson... hopefully next time!

Oh and to anyone who sells stuff AT these concerts, rip off merchants.

oxegen was great. this was my first year. being the only one of my friends prepared from the muck i had too put up with a lot of complaing from them about their feet and shoes.
Saturday the sun finally came out and the selection of music on the first day was class with such bands as director, avril lavine, editors, biffy clyro, the fratellies, sisor sisters. the wombats ,however unknown, attracted a large crowd to the new bands tent and at the end threw the key board into the crowd. but muse stole the show with an amazing audio/visual display, as gary lightbody said " they are like an alien attack"
Sunday's line up wasn't as good as saturday but still had some big names. calvin harris packed the green room. arcade fire atttracted atleast 60/70000 to the main stage. they went mad with their brass players having a wet towel figet and their drummurrer climing the scafolding of the stage to play it like a drum. the cancelation of amy whine house ment My chemical Romance had a full hour on stage. they drew a huge crowd who sang, swayed and moshed through the muck and rain to see the new jersy band. the killers lived up to their reputation and gave a great farwell to the weekend.
unfortunatly when went back to our tent it had been riped open and our sleeping bags, phones and money were stolen making it very hard to get home. but with the shuttle buses set up by dublin bus we were able to get home by 12:00.
great festival but the prices of food and wellies(€25) were a rip off. supose nothing could have been done about the muck but something as easy as walking took 10 times as long!
