What Car?

Kim Lenaghan¡I have had the most ridiculously busy couple of weeks at work which, considering my freelance status, is a blessing ¡particularly now it would appear I need a new car. Actually that¡¯s not really something that should have come as a big surprise. For at least the last two years Stuart, my magician of a mechanic, has told me that this MOT would be the last, but every time ¡®my pretty¡¯ proves him wrong and performs on the day. This time around though, it did require a re-test and even then I think it was touch and go.

Now, you might think I don¡¯t want to buy a new car because I¡¯m cheap, and I suppose there is an element of truth to that, but honestly there is a deep bond between me and my 13 year old Golf. I¡¯ve had her since she was just a toddler and we¡¯ve been through a lot together. Ah, if ¡®my pretty¡¯ could talk¡.arguments, make ups, break ups, outings and some serious shopping in her boot ¨C actually that¡¯s another part of the problem. There are so many other things I could do with the money. I¡¯ve seen this amazing dining room table and chairs and it¡¯s not like I¡¯m that ¡®into¡¯ cars. I have friends who have to have the latest Mercs and Saabs and BMW¡¯s, but when the ancient Golf goes all I want is something that gets me from A to B.

I¡¯ve been looking at ads in the paper, I¡¯ve even gone to a few car show rooms, and it¡¯s making me feel so disloyal. Worse, I have to drive in my aging automobile to get there. I know she¡¯s headed for the great scrap yard in the sky but she doesn¡¯t, and it seems such a dismal end for a decade of unstinting service. Her engine is still willing but her bodywork is weak ¨C a bit like myself really ¨C and then I have to decide what to replace her with.

You need a car that suits your looks and your personality. I¡¯m definitely not flashy or sporty ¨C indeed, I couldn¡¯t even get into a sports car with my dodgy knee ¨C I don¡¯t like those big gas guzzling 4 X 4 ¨C I¡¯d also never get one parked in my street ¨C and there¡¯s no point in getting a people carrier just for Ella the dog and me. So what kind of car am I? It¡¯s a dilemma. My lovely friend Terry said he sees me as ¡°an open car, a classic citroen D6 gorgeous ,rare and stylish¡±. I have no idea what that is, but it sounds great. I also want to be a red car if possible ¨C I just think red cars have more fun ¨C and I want to be a ¡®classic¡¯ car that improves with age, and that some enthusiast would love to cherish. Actually, I¡¯m starting to sound just like ¡®my pretty¡¯ again. Maybe I could get just one more year out of her! The other question is¡..if I see myself as a vintage Golf, what kind of car are you?

Dear Kim - you and your golf... the best thing would be to trade 'the pretty' in for another secondhand golf - at least that way you're not straying from the family (of golfs) and it isn't as if you're going all out for a brand new one either.
