As Gary Glitter said...

Hello, Hello, It's good to be back.

When John Humphrys got the time wrong this morning but then said "it doesn't matter anyway, does it, because you're not going to work ", I wondered how many of you were in that position. I've been doing news shifts for so long now that I can't remember a time when a Bank Holiday has meant an automatic day off and I imagine a lot of you are in a similar position? Are you?

That sounded like I'm feeling sorry for myself. I didn't mean it to. Anyway I'm delighted to be allowed back in the building after my hideous faux pas a few weeks back when I forgot to post The Glass Box on the blog. Access to Ed's cocktail cabinet has been restored. But for heaven's sake, don't let me make the same mistake again. Could someone please remind me later?

Rupert's in charge - last time I heard him was last Thursday night - he was the "voice in my ear" from Scotland - he was running the Scottish end of our Radio 4 election night programme . And Jeremy's here as well, so nothing can go wrong.......

Polyfilla Sequin: Please don't mention Mr. Glitter at this time of the day - I'm still digesting my breakfast!

But seriously ..... Isn't it time you had a holiday? We fully understand that, with all your roles nowadays, you're bound to forget a little thing like a glasshouse to the froggers to play in.

Btw, which Jeremy are you frolicking with today? Mr. Vine? Mr. Paxo? Mr. Fisher? - it should, of course, be the last of these. This is a picture of him working in his garden

Oh, Carolyn, may I just also say that I thought your coverage of the elections was very good, and have made a comment elsewhere on the Blog about how much I enjoyed your interview with Alan Johnston last week - You've a way of 'chatting' to powerful people as if you were elbows together on the bar, which draws them out and is both good to listen to and informative.

Did you enjoy that particular interview? And what was it like for you, an ex-teacher (like myself) chatting to the Education Secretary?

Oh, and a few thoughts went through my head while listening to that interview of how it is for an Education Secretary to sound very 'estuary' in his speaking style.

Since I started this currently lunacy as a freelance, based in the UK but working with people around the world I don't remember any of the UK's national holidays except they show up on the calendar.

In fact when Mr. Humphries made his clock-reading error (not that I ever trust him to tell the time properly - I went through a phase of when I most need it to be right, he'd always get it wrong and it jaded me) it didn't matter though. It was far too late for me, and I was on my way back to bed! The joys of working with a nightowl on EDT!

Sequin, are you also doing Friday PM this week?

I should be at work, but have hacking cough etc, so am trying to "work from home". Not with much success :-(

Can we have a bit more attention to the state of Scotland's governance, please? It's all very well reporting the French Presidential result as the top item - but bear in mind that a significant part of the United Kingdom is still waiting to discover how its devolved administraion will be made up.

sacrebleu (6) Yes, Scotland is still waiting, as are a lot of English folk who are concerned about the issue.
Personally, I think tonight's coverage was just right - an interview with someone from The Green party who didn't have a big announcement to make, and had obviously stuck to a plan of how much he was willing to make public.
I don't want speculation, and at this stage I don't want in-depth comparisons made between different possible scenarios.
I will welcome in-depth analysis after a firm decision has been made - I dare say I may even be tempted to add my point of view then, too

Sorry, Carolyn, did you mention the dreaded phrase "Rupert's in charge"? about tonight? And did you say he was also in charge last week while the Scottish elections were happening? So that's what went wrong! No wonder Scotland still don't know who their government is.

Make Rupert King of Scotland now, I say. Give the election up as a bad job.

Good Evening Sequin, I'm sorry I missed PM, I will try and Listen Again later.

I can't claim to do anything like the sort of hours you work but yes, I'm often working on weekends and Bank Holidays (though not today - yippee!) so they're not automatic days off for me either. That must be true for lots of people these days?

Something that annoys us at work is the radio station we listen to starts playing 'Friday night drivetime' songs at 3pm on a friday - when we're there until 6.30 or 7pm! Clearly I should try harder to persuade them to listen to PM instead!!
