The Beach
What is the Beach?
Itβs a place to go when the stresses of your real life need relieving. Sometimes it is fairly quiet and you might feel like youβre the only one around, but you can leave your βfootprintsβ for others to find later on. Othertimes it is the home for a real party, with constant gossip, leg-pulling, rumour, innuendo, chit-chat and weirdness. If this were a forum (and it sort of is because we post responses to each other, not just to Eddie, hence our term for ourselves 'Froggers', a combination of forum and blogger) then the beach would be the off-topic area.
It's a tropical location, no matter the time of year it's always warm and pleasant there. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, the evenings balmy. It has a number of different locations; the Nick Clarke waterfront bar; the smokers corner; Fido's Run for the dog-walkers; the Naughty Step and many others.
How do you find your way around? There is no direct answer to the question. The beach is a moveable feast, literally. It will be renewed by our Lord and master Mr. Edward de Mair each Monday morning. This is because we have found in the past that when the number of posts exceeds about 600 the entire thing becomes unwieldy and unstable. A case of the beach turning to quicksand.
Froggers often leave bottles / glasses / trays of their favourite tipple on the bar for others to sample, not to mention big / small eats.
There is a herd of camels who frequent the sands, which froggers are very fond of. There are sun-loungers, so you can take it easy and catch some rays. Quite often the late-night attendees will have a barbie.
It's a fun place, with only one real rule; Be nice to each other; we are ALL chums here. New Froggers are ALWAYS welcome.
The real debate happens on the other threads. The beach is a place for banter, whimsy, relaxation and friendship, where jarring comments are not particularly welcome. There are certain very mild protocols, which you tend to pick up as you go along. So slip your shoes off, feel the sand between your toes, relax and enjoy yourself.

So it's the morning after the night before, and *boy* was it a night before! It's well known that the chinese invented gunpowder, and it seemed that last night they were determined to use it *all*. The firecrackers were something to behold - and for some people, something to hold quite close to other people. The health and safety executive have clearly yet to start working over here. Whereas Nov 5th/New Years Eve back home sees organised events, with carefully structured proceedings, Beijing - and probably China all over - seems to revel in anarchy. Wherever you turned, someone was letting off a firecracker or a rocket, with scant regard for the chaos and mayhem around them. We recorded a number of links for The World This Weekend in the midst of the noise, but quite whether they can be used is another matter entirely. We're just listening back to it all now, and we're all beginning to suffer flashbacks...!
Well they seemed to have taken down the "Welcome Eddie Mair" placards & the bunting by the time I got to Lancaster yesterday, & the police were just clearing away the last of the crowd control barriers. From what I heard of the Any Questions programme it sounded more amusing than usual.
Our concert not without excitement as the singer who was booked, & had rehearsed on Friday night with the orch, was ill, & withdrew from the concert at midday yesterday. At which point they found another singer (in Windsor!) who knew some of the repertoire but not all. He apparently downloaded the stuff he didn't know from the internet, jumped in his car, played the music all the way,arrived in Lancaster about 5pm, rehearsed with us quickly, borrowed some posh clothes, & delivered a stunning performance! Gave new meaning to the term the show must go on, anyway.
Hello Eddie, did you enjoy Friday night and Saturday afternoon? I've yet to listen to AA and am looking forward to hearing how you got on with the regulars from AA ..... I think I've already made my views clear on *them* elsewhere.
Now, after watching Mr. Marr in the chair with Mr. Blair, it occurred to me that there is a double act out there just waiting to happen: The M&M show, starring Misters Marr and Mair. Two styles which would complement each other perfectly, with Andy as the straight man helping Eddie to deliver his wit. Eddie and Andy. How about it?
But, for what it's worth, I think you're also an excellent chair, and your humour leavened the general seriousness of the debate without losing any of the bite. I'll bet Jonathan's watching his back now!
Eddie: You may be interested to know that Marc The Frogprince has posted Chez Jonnie's. Seems the party got a bit noisy last night in Beijing. Aren't you glad you only had to go to Lancaster?
Oh, gosh, I've just realised I ran out without leaving this tray of egg and bacon filled fresh rolls for Eddie and any other froggers who happen to be lounging here this morning. Help yourselves, guys! There's a pot of fresh coffee on the Nick Clarke Bar.

Together with my neighbour, his wife, bro-in-law, sis-in-law and another neighbour, we planted over 2000 hawthorns, a couple hundred blackthorns, some wild roses and holly over the last few days. There is another half km or so of hedge yet to plant (~3000 trees). We're also protecting them with spirals and canes to keep the bunnies off. Tired but immensely satisfied in the evenings. Vedry few food miles in the beef from the hill behind the house, potatoes from local farm, but broccoli from God-knows-where.

Morning all. I drank rather too much Amaretto last night -- anyone got a big glass of chilled water? Some fresh orange juice?
I'll be lying on this sunlounger in the shade, snoozing and listening to the goings-on with half an ear.
Eric, you can share my nibbles if you like -- I have quite a selection. Mostly savoury, Indian things and some dips and 'crudities'. I'll leave them on the bar as I'm not quite up to food at the moment. Help yourselves everyone.

Last night was my first experience of playing music as wallpaper, in a restaurant. Three of us (I the only female) sitting in a corner doing a singaround of acoustic songs suitable for Valentine's diners.
First half, we were asked to 'tone it down a bit'. Second half, to 'make it a bit louder if you like'.
Non-musicians are often scared to make eye contact with 'the turn' so what with no applause either we were unsure how we were doing. But the staff assured us the diners were all talking about the live music and what a pleasant change we made.
And then I noticed how many were turning round in their seats to watch. Smiling!
To celebrate, I have brought what's left of the latest salsa (not home made this time, I'm afraid) and sour cream and these delicious 'salsa jalapeno' flavoured tortilla chips I've found in L*dl.
Oh, and some g&t, with lashings of ice.

I'm just recovering from a wonderful time with Eddie last night!
Honesty provokes me to tell you that it wasn't our Eddie, but Eddie Reader, another well known and hugely popular Scot. She gave us a wonderful concert in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh with her band of musicians, and much foot-tapping, singing and eventually dancing in the aisles was happening(at great peril to life and limb in the Upper Circle, I might add!).
Gather round later and I'll rave on a bit more about it, to those who are interested.
Sequin had better get a move on with Eddie's rugby shirts. She's only three hours left to iron them in before she's on air again herself. We can't have Appy insinuating that his garb is crumpled, can we?

Mary (23), I quite agree re the woman who lost her nerve on AA -- Eddie was gentle, professional and managed to keep things moving along without causing her any extra embarrassment. I really enjoyed the whole of AQ and AA (and I don't usually listen to AA -- the nutters depress me).

ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ digital is annoying. For a week I have had a naff ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ 1, 2, 3 Cbbc signal. (4 and cbeebies not really affected). This is Freeview. Its all okay now.
For a week ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ has been broadcasting music videos on the interactive bit. They have stopped and its only football on interactive and my signal is back.
Could there be a connection?
Thats the rant. I know I should get in touch with someone technical or climb into the loft and have a fiddle (ariel far safer to fiddle with if in a loft). But ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ freeview bandwidth not quite ready for these little interactive channels.
Wow, a quiet night on the beach, was everyone else watching Lewis too then? I rather enjoyed it.
Early night required now, two evenings out on the trot must be one too many - yawn - I'll snuggle into this hammock and be up at first light for a gallop at low tide. Perhaps a bit of beachcombing to be done.

Wow! This hot chocolate with Chilli is fantastic. At the front of the mouth you get the pleasant smooth chocolate flavour. Imagine sitting curled up on the sofa with a cup of cad.....'s. But when you swallow, boy does it kick! You get that warm/hot chilli flavour. Not unbearable but the two certainly complement.

Been playing with my new Sat Nav that I bought myself, as no one else would.
It got boring until I found it could read out aloud the text messages via Bluetooth from the phone.
...... Yes I know .. fools and their money -- but I needed cheering up after the birthday, and Mum gave me a few pennies so what better toy to invest in!
Appy: It's possible that she wore them .... But, in fact, I was rather thinking of her as 'Mum' who has been left a pile of washing to be done while absent progeny is off larking elsewhere. I'd made a reference on Sequin's thread, and was just picking it up here.

Appropos nothing which has gone previously... Is anyone out there good at English Actors' names?
We went to a concert at Queen Eliz. Hall last night (Vadim Repin for anyone who's heard him, gobsmackingly fantastic fiddler!) and sitting in the row in front was an ac-torrr - maybe early 50's, tallish, 'a few extra pounds', glasses (I have a vision of him with a monocle in something...), slight squint, distinctive timbre to his voice, a bit 'Christopher-Bigginsish but less so....' Any ideas?? It's driving us mad!
BTW Re 'Christopher Bigginsish' in my last post (if it turns up!) I just mean he looks a bit like him - I'll stop now!!
Morning all.......hope you are all well today? Just catching up with frogs after a weekend off-line. Am going to listen again (assuming I can?) to AQ and AA now that I am back in the relative peace and sanity of the office once again. It sounded like our Eric did a sterling job. For me it was the usual mad weekend of shopping/housework/being mummy with barely a moment to draw breath so if you dont mind I will just pull up a sun lounger and have a nice latte before I commence the day.
Val P - I am VERY interested in hearing more about the Eddi Reader gig, I totally love her voice - she is just a joy to listen to. Have never caught her live though and really must one day.
Fifi - glad to hear your restaurant gig went well, it is a tricky one to pull off - some people just want to eat in relative quiet so its a tricky one to get the balance just right and it sounds like you did.

On the AQ/AA debate, I haven't liked it when JD has taken to asking additional, quite lengthy questions - in AQ - this was on feedback a few weeks ago, and I felt not well answered. If a supplimentry question is needed, it should be kept short - as EM - as otherwise it's no longer an audience question but an interview. NC was very good in this respect.
Rather like many, I suspect, I don't normally make an effort for AA.

Jonnie (45). I live in West Yorkshire so emley moor is the transmitter.
One TV gives the signal strength and ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ one was strenght 1 last week and normally 8. The other TV on another aeriel (the one I get to watch) just had a pixellated picture with sound being off. Just like when DAB radio reception is poor.
The scheduled works web site gave no help. As I never thought to look till last night when the signal strength was back to normal.
It may be the aeriel. It may be ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ trying to do too much with the bandwidth. I suppose it may be the Weather!

Hello again - I've missed you all as I've been away for the weekend. Here's a bowl of roast potato and smoked salmon salad (recipe pinched from the TV ad) which is yummy and I hope fills a few holes - goes well with chilled cider, if you don't fancy wine (which I always do, actually, so there's plenty of dry cider going spare!).
Thanks to the excellent listen again thingy I have really enjoyed Eddie hosting AQ and then AA and like my fellow froggers I thought he was masterly. Eddie, you do all the incisive journalism without losing your charm and humanity, so the result is something really worth listening to without all the embarrassing pushy, verging on rude stuff which drives me mad on other progs. Hope that's not too grovelly, but you are just so good at it.
Glad to be on this warm new beach as I'm frozen in Feb. Actually, I'm pretty tired! We had lunch in the Ribble Valley in Lancs yesterday in a lovely village called Great Mitton, but when we went to get the car some vandals had broken the driver's door window. They had clearly ridden their bikes or whatever up and down the road and broken dozens of other car windows similarly. Why does this amuse them? We had a freezing 2 hour drive home and then had to wait until 2.30 am for the Autoglass chappie to turn up. So we didn't find it amusing at all.
I did enjoy Annasee's tale of the concert singer (brilliant!) and Fifi's account of the restaurant music. You mustn't think of yourself as "wallpaper", Fifi - live music in the background is so much better than canned.
Am v confused....how can TV cause autisim (as reported by the beeb). I thought it was genetic?

Well some of the Freeview mystery is now clear.
Emley Moor has six digital frequencies, or six multiplexes, known as Mux's.
Each Multiplex carries a range of services. Your two ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Mux's are transmitted on channels 52 (722MHz) and channel 46 (674 MHz).
The first Mux carries :- ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ one, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ TWO, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ 2W, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ THREE, CΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Channel, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ NEWS 24, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔi, on C52 (722MHz)
The second Mux carries :- ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ FOUR, Cbeebies, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Parliament, Community, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔi 301-303, 1Xtra ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 5 Live, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 5 Live Sports Extra, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ 6 Music, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ 7, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Asian Network.
Now for my technical bit. As you may know or may not, the higher the frequency - the smaller the wavelength - hence the smaller the elements are on the antenna.
The specified antenna for picking up the signal from Emley is a Group B aerial. (Channels 35-53), A group B aerial would have it's maximum sensitivity around channel 44, however the 1st ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Mux on Channel 52, hence the Freeview box will not get such a strong signal as the Mux that's on channel 46.
So what to do ?
Well probably the best thing is to get a larger antenna, alternatively you could get a Wideband aerial which would cover all of the frequencies, and future proofed.
Another option would be to use an aerial booster or amplifier!

Eddie, one complaint about PM- could you start it when I get into my car and switch on. Sometimes it's as early as 5.07 but can be as late as 5.20 if I have awkward customers. Feel free to leave out anything sport / tory party related if this helps to condense the programme. I've a bottle of red here; come over with your glasses if you'd like some. The bottle holder in my Car is pathetically small so may as well finish it before I start.

I've sectioned off a little Quarantine section near the shore with wind breaks and palm fronds, a la Ray Mears, so those of us with the lurgy can benefit from the fresh air without blowing germans at the rest of you. The breeze is blowing towards the sea today so we're in luck.
As a service to the frog community, I would hereby like to offer myself as a guinea pig for any hot toddy recipes you may have. My mother being both an ex nurse and a (by my standards anyway) non drinker, I have never subscribed to the HT.
However I'm very bored with this now and am willing to try anything. Leave your recipes here on the beach and I'll see if we have ingredients for any of 'em.

I have to get my own Hot Toddy. Rum hot water lemon juice sugar/honey. Breath in fumes before the alcohol all evaporates.

Not just the scottish dialects that are dying out. Northumbrian ones are too. I remember a prog when Sandy Toskvic and John Mcarthy did a yacht trip round the coast of the UK. They visited Beadnell and I can remember a bit of My great Uncle sitting talking to his brother outside one of the old fishermans huts (Both huts and fishermen were old). I can't fully remember the conversation but it was thick with dialect. Both are now fishing where the nets are always full of regulation size fish and there are no quotas.

OD'd slightly on the entire contents of the kitchen last night (that's what happens when you drink too much fizz) so feel the need to serve penance today. Therefore, I am on call, should anyone need me to do anything for them. For starters I've just brewed up. Fresh coffee, tea (herbal & Yorkshire) and home-made rock cakes are on the bar. Help yourselves.

Very quick visit to say hello - should have come down here earlier to chill out after my little rant on the Marriage thread but it was a bit early for alcoholic beverages so just went for a brisk walk around the office! I once dreamt about Jim Callaghan - years after he had retired - and I got so annoyed with him that in the course of an argument I shouted loudly at him and slapped him across the face.
The shouting woke me up and there was husband, nursing slapped face and saying 'are you awake?' in a piteous sort of way.

Of course, the problem with leaving a peace offering (133) at a place where you dare not go, in case it gets rejected, is that you never find out when it has been accepted. Quietly, now. Quietly. I do not want to wake any of the froggers. They might snitch on me to Fifi. Hey, one of them might even *be* Fifi {Gulp}. Now, if I remember rightly, I left that bottle of Shiraz next to the ice-buckets on the bar. Hey. Now that is encouraging. The bottle is no longer there. If I can find it in the glass re-cycle bin, then at least I will know that *someone* has drunk it. Of course, it is a long way to go from there, to believing that I have been forgiven, but at least it will be a start. I will be able to ask the other froggers if they know who drunk it. Maybe someone shared it with . . . oh . . . oh now that is not good! A familiar looking bottle of Shiraz with no sign of imbibation; placed on one of the lower shelves β rejected. It looks as no-one has even *tried* to open it. Of course, it could be a co-incid . . . no! It is the one that I left for her. Unless there is another frogger writing βSORRY FIFIβ in large black letters on bottles of Shiraz at the NC bar. Which is not beyond the bounds of possibility, true, but I think I should assume, at present, that I am still in Fifiβs bad books. {Sigh} I do not know what else I can do. I have admitted that the mistake about the subject of the pmblog extra poll was totally mine. I have got jonnie to put up a new poll so that no-one complains to her about the wording or stats that she used. I have even offered her a peace offering on the Beach. It must be something to do with the February blues. Just got back from Tai Chi - finding the new stuff with fans quite hard going - to see you all apparently in need of a big group hug.
So large pot of camomile tea keeping warm, and some cool herb and fruit punch next to it with rosemary for concentration, mint for alertness and sage leaves to keep the February bugs at bay.

So, back from a busy morning in February in time for a mammoth Rugby-fest. My newly shorn locks may've scared the camels though, they're looking at me a bit oddly (the froggers who have managed to find the photo of me in the flickering place should not be saying which hair did you get cut! :-p)

btw, I'm sure I've said elsewhere but, for the record, Alistair Campbell is quite, quite lovely and there is no shame in lustful thoughts there if you ask me (which I know you didn't but there is my opinion anyway...)
