Passing through Beeston in Bedfordshire, we thought we'd stop and give a mention to an e-mail we liked, from reader Poppy Cope. She says that the A1 cuts off the village from the nearby town of Sandy in much the same way as the river did years ago.

"My husband's grandmother used to have straw put on the A1 so the sound of cart wheels would not disturb her when she had a headache," she told us.

Thanks, Poppy. We suspect the trucks on the A1 might give the grandmother an almighty headache these days.

While we are here, we should mention that one of the things Sandy is known for is being the home to the headquarters of the .

The charity says it's been doing relatively well in some areas since the recession hit, but the downturn has left some notable holes in its budget and future plans. More about that on Tuesday, when we plan to call into one of the RSPB's nature reserves, Fairburn Ings in North Yorkshire.
