Paul Mason's Idle Scrawl

Crikey, Michael Crick is in Sven's reception

The words "Michael Crick is in reception" strike fear into the heart of many a politician. Today, fired up by the response of Newsnight viewers to the Swede's sang froid and England's poor performance, Cricky got into an England press conference and gave it both barrels. Echoing Gareth Southgate's famous quote, he asked Svennis whether - at half time tomorrow - he expected to be sounding more like Winston Churchill than Iain Duncan Smith...

Sven replied:

"I had a speech at half-time against Brazil and, if that's what Gareth Southgate expected or not, that's history. "What will I say at half-time tomorrow? I don't know. It will depend on how the match is and how the first 45 minutes have gone. I will be as I have always been, I will not read Winston Churchill tonight and try to be him."

So that's reassuring.

As for Iain Duncan Smith, England insiders revealed Sven may be considering calling him up as a late replacement striker if England go through to the semis.

Hi Paul, what do you think about the repeated outbreak of violence today amongst England fans?

That's 500 arrests in Stuttgart, a few hundred in Cologne, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ had to shut down its big screens in England because of riots yet nobody seems to do or say anything? In fact Newsnight tonight featured a bizarre piece all about why Scotland fans dont support England, surely a strange news priority under the circumstances?

Do you think that English violence has become so normalised now it just gets ignored? What would you have to do to get thrown out of a tournament?

It's a good point. I think the Beeb has been on the case reporting Engerland fan violence - and there was a good report on Channel Four News about it. If England stay in the WC I will urge the programme to get on the case with this. Cheers

At the present time, England VS Portugal is doing better than Germany VS Argentina.

The Anti-Racist Declarations of Beckham and Figo were the 21st Century Equivalent of two songs "Ode to Peace" by Beethoven and "Whenever I Call You Friend" by Kenny Loggins.

Although there has been no goal in the first half, the game was excellent.

Can I please have an e-mail address for Michael Crick ?

I have evidence of major irregularities within my local authority. Standards Board of England have allowed a local "whitewash", Ombudsman says it is "outside his remit" Audit Commission aren't interested, but have recently given the authority a clean bill of health. My local MP is closely associated with the errant councillors, and I simply don't know where to go.

I'd like to e-mail a resume of the matter, with only enough supporting documentation to illustrate that I'm not a 'crack pot'

This is an email for Michael Crick. Michael, I've got a wonderful clip of you interviewing a private-sector CEO in, I think, the 80s. Your interview is about whether this guy ought to have taken a pay cut in a time of recession, and you pointed to the fact that he used to work for a lot less in the public sector. He gets furious with you, and walks out. My question is: who was this guy? I'd love to know, so that I can find out more about it. Could you help?
Thanks,
Robert

I am a regular watcher of Newsnight which purports to be a heavyweight political programme. Therefore I do not expect to see people like Michael Crick trying to stuff a microphone under a politician's nose and end a crude question with "Mr XXXX". I did like the riposte from Cameron when he said "I thought you had got a proper job now, Michael". Further last week on the programme about cash for honours, he had more ums and ers than he had words. The man cannot speak lucidly. After people like Martha Kearney and Liz Mackean, this man is a joke. Is this really the best that the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ can do?
