How to say: Vojislav Ε eΕ‘elj

08:59 UK time, Friday, 1 December 2006

A weekly guide to names and words in the news from Catherine Sangster of the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Pronunciation Unit.

Today's pronunciation is the Serb ultra-nationalist Vojislav Ε eΕ‘elj, . We recommend the pronunciation VOY-iss-laf SHESH-el. In Baltic and Slavic languages, the hÑček or caron (the v-shaped symbol) changes the pronunciation of s to sh: e.g. MiloΕ‘eviΔ‡, which should be pronounced mi-LOSH- not mi-LOSS-.
