  1. Bhangra 2007 - Jan to April Review

    • Dipps Bhamrah
    • 1 May 07, 12:45 PM

If I quickly rewind 12 months, these were the album that were repping the Bhangra industry in the first third of the year.

    Ominous DJ's ¨C Unfinished Business
    Zeus - Street Remixes
Notorious Jatt - Livin It Up
    Serious Recs ¨C Ne Balieyh
    Jinx ¨C Culture Shock
    Sukshinder Shinda - Collaborations

All great albums, but as we all know, 2006 was one of the driest Periods in Bhangra history. Fast forward 12 months and this is just a snap shot of tunes which I think are making a noise in 2007 so far.

    Oh Jaan Meri Ya
I predicted it in January and I¡¯m still saying it¡¯s the track of the year. It¡¯s had a love it or hate it reaction to the double CD album but as a DCS fan, I think its an album with a great example of Bhangra versatility in music. The Bhangra-fied Quwali ¡®Pilaade Pilaade¡¯, Surma & Rab Ne Banaiyea Joriya are all outstanding tracks as well.

    Jaan Punjabi
It¡¯s another dancefloor bangger from the Hit Maker Hepz. He just seems to have this habit of a big tune every album and ¡®Jaan Punjabi¡¯ is a great musical example of if it ain¡¯t broke don¡¯t fix it! ¡®Mere Naal Gal Kar¡¯ by Off-licence ft Abhilasha is a nice chilled out funky tune worth listing to as well.

    Heer
Not only is this an awesome tune, the video, the production and the man that is Jags Klimax has definitely made his mark in 2007. He¡¯s definitely established himself as a player in the game and backs it up with is DJ and now production skils. ¡®Nath Dig Pae¡¯ with the vocals of Kaka is a dark horse tune with a lot of potential too sneak into DJ sets.

    Kaun Nachdi
After 3 years of expecting fans and hype, Kaun Nachdi finally drops as a single. Ravi Bal becomes possibly the first producer, aside from Shinda (I could be wrong, but can¡¯t think where if I am), to pen the music for Jazzy B. The standout mixes are the Sada Desi & Streetology Remixes and even though it¡¯s become a bit of a marmite track, I think it¡¯s a track which has the potential to make an impression.

    Zulfa
Rush the DJ on a solo flex and a very musically sound debut album. ¡®Zulfan¡¯ ft Surinder Shinda is one of the big tunes on the album along side ¡®Akhiya¡¯ ft Avina and Kuldip Manak's ¡®Goriye¡¯ (you have to check out Manak intro....too funny!)

    Tappe
Sometime we get caught up in the first 2 tracks of an album and forget about the rest. Well I personally think that DJ Vix¡¯s Tappe ft Lehmber Hussainpuri, has gone missing off the Bhangra radar. It¡¯s a great tune which is enhanced with the fact that its Lehmber vocaling. The Punjab track ft Surinder Shinda is another lost album track worth listening too.

In my opinion the year has got off to a banging start with some great tunes and decent debut albums in particular. With the busy summer season rolling up on us with plenty of mela¡¯s, BBQ¡¯s and weddings pencilled in, these are the tunes and acts that I think will be making their mark over the next few months¡.

    Udeeka - Dalvinder Singh
    The Album - USR
Living The Dream - The Music Man Sukshinder Shinda
Dil Nai Lagda - Jeevan Maan
    Oh Jandi - Folk Magic

2007...so far so good....Keep pumpin them Bhangra beats!

HERES MY VIEW ON THE TRACKS LISTED ABOVE:

Oh Jaan Meri Ya = cheesy popfied track with juggy
Jaan Punjabi = rinsed beat and loops
Heer = solid track but credit should go to frantic not jags
Kaun Nachdi = allow this tune no 1 cares
Zulfa = forget zulfa its all about naal nachna by the same artist
Tappe = same rinsed beats as pbn/jags klimax no innovation in this industry.

    NOW TO THE ALBUMS MENTIONED:

Udeeka - Dalvinder Singh - WILL BE HUGE BECAUSE OF THE CONCEPT OF A LIVE BAND ALBUM

The Album - USR - SOLID PROMOS
Living The Dream - Sukshinder Shinda - GOING TO BE HIT OR MISS

Dil Nai Lagda - Jeevan Maan - JEETI VERSION IS 10 TIMES BETTER DEN PBN

Folk Magic - AMX - THE BIGGEST RISING STAR OF 2007/8 NUFF SED!

Completely agree with the comments made by Dipps Bhamrah. The stand out tracks for me personally are Jaan Punjabi and Oh Jaan Meri yaa.

Jaan Panjabi by PBN is another dancefloor smash. PBN always manages to deliver as you say and is one of the best talents in the UK bhangra circuit. This track represent UK bhangra.

Oh Jaan meri Yaa is an anthem in its own right. Old meets new and what a collabo to say the least. Juggy D and Shin complement each other very well and its good to see DCS back with a bang!

Heer By Jags is also good. So far the year has started great. Personally im looking forward to Sukhshinder Shinda's solo as well as Jazzy B becasue these guys are deadly.

great review and great to see that bhangra music has picked itself up and is doing well (touch wood).

heer is the best track this year and i do like i've heard the promos for Oh Jandi from Folk Magic and that does sound like a solid bhangra track and Jeetis dil nai lagda is a beuatiful song.

Bhangra industry is definately picking up, with new artists making their mark. Would like to see new artists producing good music aswell as the established artists.

Iv heard the promos for folk maigic and usr, and im very impressed, very good music, however, i think artist also needs to experiment with new singers instead of getting the old kaka or surinder shinda just to make the song a hit. And noticed usr have a song about udham singh, which is very good, teach the young generation about our past and culture which is good as i always felt that music should also be a form of education about our punjabi culture. 2007 is looking good.

This is my first time coming across these blogs, but I had to comment. I totally agree about this being a dry period for Punjabi music overall. It's been in a decline for sometime. Even the songs that are decent are formulaic and sound the same. Granted, I live in the US and we're not in as much direct contact with new releases as the folks in the UK, but regardles,, the PMI (Punjabi music industry) is in dire need of a rennaissance.

Kaun Nachdi-Too long in the making
    Zulfa-alright

from the albums that have now released, dalvinder singhs udeeka is very good, live band albums are always good. like the shere vargeh song.
usr album is very good too, has many solid tracks, love the udham singh song and jat shrabi.
dil nai lagda by jeevan mann, not too sure about the album, but the title song is very nice, nice slow melow song for easy listening.
folk magic, not too sure about the album as a whole, the oh jandi track wasnt even that good. only the singers were good.

living the dream left, which i think will also be a good album, but not as the same league as collaborations.

Well the review by Dipps i think he has got it spot on really. However i think the Dalvinder Singh album was a bit of a let down, the best is yet to come i think with tru skool promos sounding sooo goood! The other songs above i think are great, brilliant dancefloor tracks, usr album was the shock buy as it was cheap and so good. i easily loved off 80 percent of the album. folk magic was another surpising album, rush the dj album was good too. i think the year will get better once a certain derby man comes through.

usr sounds like the same old same old to me and the packaging was a disgrace. I think it is the first time ever in the history of the uk bhangra market that the original cd was actually on a cdr??? Whats all that about?

Rest of the albums have been top and there have been some really good bhangra dancefloor tracks overall.

Bring on Jazzy B and Shinda.
