  1. The Living Legend...Gurdas Maan

I have a question for you¡.how many artists do you know that appeal to a 6 year child, their 30 plus parents and their 70 plus granparents? How many artists can you think of, that would pay to watch another artist perform? Which artist has the respect to bring together different castes, communities and religions with the power of their music? Does anyone have the amazing ability to have that pull? Well within the world of Punjabi music there is one man who stands alone who can answer these questions¡.that man is the living legend, Gurdas Maan!

    GURDASS 2.JPG

For many people Gurdas Maan is the be all and end all of music. He is the leader of Punjabi music, culture and pride. A singer, song writer, composer, actor, he is the equivalent to Elvis Presley. His song, style, profile, mere presses, has an overwhelming effect on those who are fortunate to see him perfor or in person. In my personal opinion, the transition from artist to legend is cemented when the performer doesn¡¯t even need to sing but can give his audience that look and still have them chanting his name. That¡¯s Gurdas Maan!

Gurdas Maan has been the undisputed king of Punjabi music since making his debut back in 1980. His performance of ¡®Dil Da Mamla Hai¡¯, which he also wrote, caused nation wide waves in his homeland of India, since then, Gurdas Maan has become the world wide icon for Asian audiences. But why is Gurdas Maan so popular? What is different about him? What separates him for other artists in the eyes of the public?

The answer is simple¡.life and respect.

His music is kept simple and to the point. The unique aspect about Gurdas Maan¡¯s music and in particular his lyrics, is that he writes and about life, real life. Where as the majority of the music world sing about drinking, dancing, women and violence, Gurdas Maan¡¯s lyrical content captures the audience¡¯s imagination and has the ability to make them visualise the words in their minds.
His track ¡®Chugliyan¡¯ is about gossiping¡how it takes place in all walks of life and the comical results it can have. ¡®Mamla Garbar Hai¡¯ translates to ¡®There¡¯s A Problem Here¡¯ and talk about the complexity of some of life¡¯s everyday situations.
A song which stands out for me is ¡¯Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne¡¯ which translate into ¡®The Grandad¡¯s Are Dancing¡¯. The song is a comical smoke screen to highlight the plight and disrespect of the current generation of youth. The hook of the song is ¡®Sit down young lad cos now the Grandad¡¯s are dancing¡¯ and that is something that today¡¯s youth might not be able to do when they are older because of their lifestyle. He talks about lighter scenarios, where lads nowadays insist on using gel in their hair because traditionally used mustard oil smells. Laziness, obesity and even the issue of drug taking amongst boys is tackled. This is the pull of Gurdas Maan¡¯s music and reason why he is so admired, because his music talks about his life, my life, your life¡.real life! A song which he¡¯s written for his forthcoming album sums Gurdas Maan up¡¡®You can earn and eat your roti with pride, even if you¡¯re a boot polisher¡¯!

    GURDASS 3.JPG

Respect! For someone who is the cornerstone of Punjabi music around the world, for someone who can demand anything with the power he has, Gurdas has always maintained a level of dignity and respect which far surpasses those around him.
His performances start and end with him praising and looking for divine inspiration. At the recent Alpha ETC Punjabi Awards, he presented the lifetime achievement award to Ranjit Kaur and in doing so said that he is no position to be giving this awards to her, he is in awe of her as well and touched her feet before presenting the award to her. A great mark of respect!

In particular songs, he¡¯s penned and praised many of the legends of our music and culture and crediting their achievements.
In ¡®Punjabiye Zubane¡¯ (Punjabi Language) he talks to the Punjabi Zubane as a physical being and goes on to talk to it about how its been ill treating treated by some and how its been respected by some. In the final verse he tells the language that legendry artists like Surinder Kaur, Parkash Kaur, Asa Singh Mastana have all does you a great service, writers and poets like Shiv Kumar Batalvi and Noorpuri have kept the language alive. The song ¡®Pind Diyan Galliyan¡¯, ¡®The Streets of my Village¡¯, he talks about the way life used to be in the villages of Punjab. In the song he credits another legend of Punjabi music in Kuldip Manak and talks about how he and previous generation all grew up hearing his tones being bellowed across the village.

    GURDASS 1.JPG

Gurdas Maan respect is cemented by his own perception on himself. In songs which he has written himself he will write the line ¡®Marjaane Maan Nimane Nu¡¯ within the context of the song¡.which means ¡®Small and down to earth Maan (himself)¡¯.

From music to acting, songs about comedy situations to serious life issues, whether you¡¯re a Desi head, hardcore Hip Hop or Grime fan, the legend Gurdas Maan resides in the hearts of all who know Punjabi music. He was, is and forever will be the leader of Punjabi music, culture and lifestyle. From India to Canada to right here at home in the UK, Gurdas Maan is the man who brings a smile to your face with his music and makes you proud to be Punjabi wherever you live!

Long live the legend¡the living legend¡Gurdas Maan!

Gurdas mann, no doubt, is a great man and he is a great mann. I was surprised to see all british indians in Birmingham ERENA. Never saw such a big crowd of punjabi indians. I saw one young girl of 25 ish smoking just outside the hall in front of every one and wearing salvar suit. Main thing is Mann sahib was singing a song on our culture same time.May god give some sense to this new generation.

I forgot to take my camera to Mann show. Can anyone send me his pictures and videos of uk live shows. I am going to make a gurdas mann blog soon.

    Thanks

    Not Quite.

But Gurdas Mann is a living legend, his music, his lyrics can be educational to the youth about the punjabi culture. And he is very very down to earth which is one of the reasons of his success.

Living legend gurdas mann, beautiful read.

The one thing that gurdas mann does is speak the truth and stick by it.

remeber the track on the 5 rivers album, fail karage ja tenu pass? that wsa a diss track in style to dhaler mendhi when he said that he was bigger then gurdas. gurdas mann just replied by saying people like me and orther legends of music helped you on your way and now your having a pop at us, with gurdas asking the question should we fail you or pass you, you tell us.

honesty in his music, he is the man

Well all I gotta say is that I really enjoyed reading this blog about Mr Gurdaas Maan. Although I listen to all different Music genre but still he's still on my top list as all his songs are meaningful and are really to the point. I hope that in the future that Mr Maan will continue with all his good work and make all the PUNJABI's all over the world proud of their culture and what they are. I beleive that all his songs can be related to all generations. I love the song BABE BHANGRA POUNDE NE. And I hope that all the younger generations will appreciate his songs.

GURDAS MAAN LIVE AT NEC 2007 (REVIEW)

The NEC show as I saw it from the front (oooooh)...

The obvious comparison straight away will be with 2005 NEC show - still talked about; still anticipated on DVD; and still Aman Promotions¡¯ inimitable gift to the fans. Thank you for promoting Him, and thank you for entertaining us. So, let it be said that this show was no ¡®2005 show¡¯, so I won¡¯t go there, but still, how was it? Well, Maan was, in a word ¨C masterful with a capital mmm...

The show, planned to begin at half seven, ¡®fashionably¡¯ began half an hour later. Was this time made up, hmm Aman Promotions? We¡¯ll find out...
After the delay, Maan came out to an overwhelming 9-ish out of 12,000. He made no delays, a quick speech, a glance around the arena and the show began, and he never stopped. As soon as he approached the mic-stand and I heard the first ¡®Haaaraiii Om...¡¯, I got that feeling of ¡®wow, that¡¯s why his voice is the best of all¡¯ - rustic, yet smooth. Not the bluntness of Kamal Heer, nor the sheer throatiness of Harbhajan Maan, nor the sweet laziness of Babbu Maan, but a separate sound; clear and emotive... so Gurdas Maan.

Once his conventional intro-song was done, which seems to sound more spiritual with each year, he began the show with a great song. Now don¡¯t get me wrong, it wasn¡¯t an old one, it was a new one, but so good, I call it great. ¡®Roti haq di khaiye ni, paawe boot polish¡¯a kariye.¡¯ Think of it as a ¡®Babe Bhangra Paunde ne;¡¯ danceable yet meaningful. The verses were so brilliant - how dare he still write so right. After he whet our appetite for his forthcoming album with such an amazing song, to which he also danced around mimicking a boot polish, he proceeded to the second song. The sheer mention of Challa made the crowd...well, need I say more? He added the oft-missed verse of ¡®Chall lishka mare, maawa jaandiya vaare, dukh puthra de paare. Challa chi-chi paaya, dheeyan than de parayaaaa¡¯.

He constantly went to the ¡®dancers¡¯ on the tiers. No he never jumped on the speaker like in 2005, but how high should he go? I personally felt that he was on full form, and danced and pranced like ONLY Maan does ¨C not forceful dancing like Kamal Heer; ¡®Look at me and my flexibilty¡¯, but the dance that goes WITH the feel of the song. Maan doesn¡¯t dance WITH the music, he BECOMES the music.

    Back to the show...

Maan bent over at 90 degrees, put the mic to his feet and began stomping along the stage so that we hear the jhanjar on his feet let out a sound which resembled that of a doli leaving. For a moment, Maan was getting married. It was that good. Followed by a deserving round of applause he belted out, so warmly, Waris Shah¡¯s verse ¡®Doli chardi Heer ne mariya cheeka. Menu le chale baabula, le chaleee. Menu aaj di raat rakh babbula ve. Chat kahaar ne doli le chale¡¯ He straight away went onto ¡®Ishque Di Maari¡¯ and without pause, I mean literally no pause, he went to ¡®Bas Rehan De¡¯, it was as if he ¡®had to say it¡¯, emotions got the better of him.

We were treated to some top comedy from the band member (backing vocalist) and also a tribute to Bhola (Bhatinde waala - old band member). This was Maan¡¯s break, but not ours as we could still see him. Another highlight was Maan ji going back in time to recollect a gem, an unpopular gem if you¡¯re not a fan. He recited the whole of ¡®Baaki de kam baad¡¯ch, pela seth zaroori eh¡¯. Brilliant!

Maan also added two more new songs. One was a beautiful soft number. ¡®Sakiye saheliye, ¡®gora¡¯ diye chelliye. Das kithe rakhi saadi cheez.¡¯ Beautiful. One for the girls. Secondly, he mentioned that he thought ¡®Challa¡¯ should get married, so he decided to pen ¡®Challi¡¯. This comment was followed by laughs and anticipation. The song itself was followed by deserving applause. It¡¯s a ¡®boliyan type¡¯ number where the ¡®challi¡¯ finally decides to be united with the challa, and it contains verses that are ¨C to stem a Bollywood ¡®cool¡¯ word ¨C ¡®rocking¡¯ yaar.

The show was as long as this post; difference is the show was getting more interesting with time, so I¡¯ll have to end briefly...

I can¡¯t even explain half the magical things Maan said, but just briefly, towards the end he did a medley of many hits including, Kamli Yaar Di Kamli (with the end of Lutti Gaiyee¡¯ included); he did Prande, Mamla Gadbad Hai and Bachpan Chala Gaya with Pind Diya Galliyan.

To finish, he did a tribute to Manoj Punj and explained that he wrote Dosto Lo Aagai Kari at college for his leaving friends. ¡®Little did I know when I would ¡®actually¡¯ use it¡¯ he claimed. Then, now this is important, he explained that HE WROTE Peer Tere Jaan Di for his senior year at college when leaving. He finished with the latter, with a settled tear.

And finally, going back to earlier, did Maan ji finish too early due to a late start? Nope. He continued through to three hours. Perfect! Did Aman Promotions have to fork out a ridiculous amount to the Arena for Maan¡¯s ridiculously short time-addition? Yes. Did Maan acknowledge this? Yes. Do we appreciate what the ORGANISERS sometimes do? Maybe not. Are we thankful to them? We should be. You may not have noticed if you were there, but the time was right, though he could go on all night. And that rhymed, alright?

That was the show, in a fraction of it¡¯s glory. If you haven¡¯t bought your European tour ticket yet, buy it. If you have, give it to me....
It¡¯s going to be that good!

One more thing, Hans Raj Hans Raj...Hans was there too. He seemed chuffed. Probably thought 10,000 people came to see him. No doubt he¡¯s a talent, but what Maan did on stage proved that he, Gurdas Maan himself, will never improve. Why? Well, they say competition is healthy for improvement, but if Maan has no competitors, how is he to get better? Simple math.

There was an impressive firework display too, almost matching 2005. But one thing¡¯s for sure, since Aman Promotions have taken over Gurdas Maan in 2005 after Anand Pan¡¯s disrespectful ¡®set-up¡¯ of Maan¡¯s 2003 tour, the show has got visually deserving of it¡¯s artist...and Arena mind you. Top performers perform here, only top performers. And they made sure it looked that way. Credit to Ashok Suman and Jag. Sometimes young creative minds are needed to deliver the experienced material of masters. The equation is, long may it continue and still improve ¨C Aman Promotions + Gurdas Maan = Unrivalled Punjabi Show. This is from what I¡¯ve seen and been to so far.

May Maan forever continue performing in the big stages, where no one else can even dare.

hes allright.....there are better more talented people out there...I know hes the sacred cow of punjabi music...but I dont really much care for his style of music. For one thing he hires cheap instrument players who play very conventional type of music. Secondly, he sold out to the Bollywood people back in the late 90s (to become a pop star?) and then rushed back in to Punjab after he realized his Punjabi/Hindi songs werent really winning him any fans in Tamil Nadu. Anyone remember those albums? Total sellout and a fake. The same goes for Hans Raj Hans. I put him one step above Sunny Deol of people who really dont care about Punjabi but have been duping people into making them the marquee of punjabiness. Jazzy B and writer Rattan Reehal have done a greater service to Punjab and in my opinion have not received the due credit by the sheep.

What I would like to see and for Anand Productions to organise is a one off open air concert at the new Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 fans. I would be willing to pay around ?100 for the privelege of hearing all his major tracks sung over say 8 - 10 hours with a few breaks.

The concert would rival live aid, red nose, we could call it the British Gurdas Day.

In order for this to happen I need everyone who reads this to contact Anand Productions and tell them we want an open air Wembley concert organised.

Consider also the stadium has a roof so no cancellations are required due to downpours.
