Adding on a number line

We can use a number line to add or subtract numbers from 1-10.

Let’s try 7 + 2

Start on 7 and jump 2 places further on to finish on 9.

7 + 2 = 9

Subtracting using a number line

To subtract, we jump back to a smaller number.

Let’s try 6 - 4

Start on 6 and jump 4 places back to finish on 2.

6 - 4 = 2

Example 1

Here is a number line from 0 - 10

Use it to help you work out 4 + 3

Where do you start? How many do you jump? Where do you finish?

4 + 3 means start on 4 and jump on 3 places to finish on 7.

4 + 3 = 7

Work out 8 - 3

Start on 8 and jump 3 places back to finish on 5.

8 - 3 = 5
