When Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, he had aggressive foreign policy aims. Britain initially tried to deal with Nazi Germany through appeasement, which failed.

Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939. The war lasted until 1945 when Japan surrendered.

After the defeat of France in 1940, Britain and its empire was left to fight Germany alone. The Battle of Britain began in the summer of 1940.

World War Two brought many changes to life in Britain. Rationing was introduced, to ensure that everyone received enough food, while many children from cities were evacuated.

When World War Two broke out in 1939, Britain called upon countries from across the empire for help. The contribution of people from across the British Empire was huge.

In 1929, Hitler and the Nazi Party took advantage of the impact of the Great Depression to win greater public support. Hitler became German Chancellor in 1933.

In 1933, there were communities of Jewish people living all over Europe. There was a huge diversity in politics, religious practices and culture across these communities.

Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany in 1933. He introduced antisemitic laws, and the persecution of Jewish people and other groups got worse over time.

The Holocaust was the murder of approximately six million Jewish men, women and children by the Nazis and their collaborators during World War Two.

Many different minority groups were persecuted by the Nazis. Ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, gay men and political opponents were all targeted by the Nazi regime.
