What is Threads?

Threads is a new social media platform developed by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, that’s gaining significant traction as it weaves its way into app stores.

Parent company Meta say it’s an app that is "for sharing text updates and joining public conversations." Like Twitter, users can write posts "up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes."

How do I get Threads?

You can download the app on to your phone (Android and iPhone), and it is currently available in more than 100 countries around the world such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

However due to EU digital media laws, it has not been launched in EU countries yet.

What's the difference between Threads and Twitter?

Within just a few hours of its launch, Threads became the fastest social media platform to attract one million users, surpassing Twitter's two-year mark to reach the same milestone.

Threads was announced when Twitter added a temporary restriction to their website, which caused frustration for users. Interestingly the two apps share similarities, with both allowing you to post short messages, 'like' things, share content, and quote other people's posts. However, it doesn't have the option to send direct messages right now or use hashtags.

Is Threads linked to Instagram?

With the app being brand new, no one has reported any major issues yet, but some users have said that deleting Threads also deletes their Instagram account as both are linked together. This is correct. Meta have said “you may deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.”

So, if you do decide to use Threads, keep in mind this potential issue.

There are also concerns of scams, as users have noticed an influx of fake accounts impersonating real people popping up. These fraudulent profiles may be used to conduct scams so users need to be extra cautious.
