If numbers are your worst nightmare, don’t worry: you’re not alone! Many people struggle with maths, but it’s often how you feel about maths that’s holding you back, rather than your skills. The good news is, you can change your maths mindset and learn to accept, or even enjoy, maths!

1. Stay calm

When faced with a maths problem, don’t panic! You’re probably already using more number skills in everyday life than you realise. So, the next time you’re stressed out by numbers, just take a deep breath and have a go – you might surprise yourself!

2. Just try it

Instead of avoiding maths, try setting yourself the challenge of actually tackling an everyday maths problem like splitting the bill – it’s good practice and, after all, no one wants to pay more than they should! You’d be amazed how much difference it makes when you approach problems in a positive frame of mind.

3. Talk it out

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or check you’re getting it right. Ask someone you feel comfortable with for help. You can also use free online tools and apps – there are plenty out there, but the National Numeracy Challenge is a good place to start.

4. Take it slowly

You don’t have to hurry. Doing maths on your own terms and in your own time will allow you to work on your skills worry-free. You can also take the pressure off by writing things down.

5. Keep at it

Numbers can be tough but the more you do, the easier it will get. Like everything else, improving takes effort so don’t give up! Keep going and you’ll see the results.
