Over 100 years ago, the England cricket team were given a royal thrashing at the Oval by Australia, marking the first time the side had beaten England on home soil. Giving voice to the country's despair, the newspaper The Sporting Times printed a story soon after lamenting the death of English cricket.
They joked that English cricket should be burnt and sent to Australia. As it turns out, a group of Australian women presented an urn with what are thought to be some burnt bails to the English side. This then became the coveted Ashes trophy.
