Edith Bowman sang the praises of Birmingham students live to the nation on her Radio 1 show after seeing them perform at Access to Music’s annual awards ceremony on 5th December 2007.

DJ Chrome (AKA Mike Walkenden) and Jodi Lawrence were two of just six acts chosen to perform at the annual event, which celebrates the achievements of music students.

Urban music winners

Edith Bowman presented awards to students from across the country, including Birmingham’s Sherelle Thomas and Jermaine Donegal (both 19, from Aston and Perry Bar) who received the National Business Enterprise Award. Jermaine and Sherrelle perform as hip-hop/r'n'b duo Sparks and Scarce, and were runners up in the recent UK Urban Music awards.

Master Kunal (AKA Kunal Raval, 19 from Handsworth) received the National Culture & Diversity Award and Daniel Sankarsingh (18) received the award for Outstanding Student of the Year, Birmingham.

British Eminem

Edith said: "James Morrison was involved in Access to Music before he hit the big time, so it’s always a good place to look out for up and coming talent and the performances yesterday during the awards show were incredible.

"A guy called Chrome who looks like a British Eminem, he’s amazing, he was brilliant, so Chrome well done for your performance, it was my favourite from yesterday.
