Lily Allen: Live review

By Tess Langley, site user
Prancing around in her ballgown in all her 'blinging' majesty, it's London lass Lily Allen at Carling Academy Birmingham.

New young Pony Club/Lily Allen - Carling Academy - 6 November 2006

Now then boys and girls, what happens when you put three girls and two boys who have a fetish for 80s new wave bands like the Stranglers and Talking Heads in a band? An amalgamation of 80’s electro beats, robot-like vocals mish-mashed with a bit of good old fashioned pop that’s what. Welcome to the New Young Pony Club.

Supporting Lily Allen at the Carling Academy seemed to provide the club with a mass of sweaty youths who didn’t refrain from bopping along to their funky tunes.

This band had style, charisma and an abundance of confidence, not to mention a distinctly retro-air about them. They’re different to any other band at the moment, yet exactly the same. Ah, the joys of pop.

I have to say though, apart from the amazingly cool sunglasses decorating the face of bassist Igor, (not too dissimilar from my own pair that tragically died at the beginning of the summer) it didn’t really light any fires inside me. However, internal spontaneous combustion seemed to be a common occurrence judging by the roars of a very satisfied crowd.Ìý

Bladder emptied and drink refilled, the time had come for me to experience the wonder that is Lily Allen. I’ve never really paid much attention to this ‘Laandan’ lass, but I was pleasantly and somewhat scarily surprised at the realisation that I think I may be a closet Lily Allen fan. She filled the room with her blinging brashness and girly charm, prancing around in a ball gown singing about the finer things in life.

As the pop and ska beats rained down on us all I found it more difficult to suppress the urge to bounce around in my cider soaked skirt. At a gig where eyelash curlers and blusher are essential tools for trips to the loos, it becomes crystal clear that this is definitely one for the ladies. Girl power anyone?
