Babyshambles: reviewed

By Paul Tift, site user
Rock rebels Babyshambles played Birmingham Carling Academy: "Pete Doherty is back and better than ever" says our reviewer Paul Tift.

Babyshambles (The Frog Tour) - Carling Academy - 01/10/06

Has anybody ever heard of that bloke who used to be in The Libertines? You know, the one who has been in and out of rehab for the past year? The one who has a tendency to either not turn up for gigs or just turn up ludicrously late? The one who has allegedly married Kate Moss? Have I jogged your memory yet?

Babyshambles
Babyshambles

The name is Pete Doherty and he brought his new Babyshambles line-up to headline the Birmingham Academy as part of The Frog Tour. Not only has the tour got the most unpredictable headliners but it has two of Britain鈥檚 brightest prospects, The Holloways and Noisettes!

Due to Pete Doherty鈥檚 poor punctual skills it was no surprise that the night did not fully sell out. And with the curfew set for 10:30 there was no room for Babyshambles to turn up late.

The Holloways

The night began with The Holloways who played a storming 30 minute set full of the quirky indie tunes that have followed them around over the past year.
The band played songs such as 鈥淕enerator鈥 and 鈥淭wo Left Feet鈥 to great applause. After this performance I would love to see them play a headline set.

Noisettes

After a short sound check Noisettes took to the stage seemingly trying to follow The Holloways example. Noisettes were completely different to The Holloways and were not gratefully received. After two songs they left the stage completely.

It was now time for the headliners to shine. As the lights went off the crowd erupted yet again as Peter took to the stage. The set opener 鈥淜illamangiro鈥 was played with the crowd jumping and singing constantly. A number of objects were thrown on stage for Pete, which he gratefully received. This continued for the rest of the night.

As the set continued with more songs taken off 鈥淒own In Albion鈥 it鈥檚 clear that Babyshambles were trying to wow the crowd a little bit too much. But old favourites such as 鈥淧ipe Down鈥 and 鈥淭he Man Who Came To Stay鈥 brought the crowd to life.

Peter was growing on stage. Many a time he has been seen swaggering around, barely able to sing. This of course is not the case tonight, as a fairly plumper Pete is able to sing clearly and talk to the crowd on more then one occasion. As the set continued newer songs were added like the recent song 鈥淏eg, Steel Or Borrow鈥.

As Babyshambles continue their set they played the brilliant 鈥淎lbion鈥. This song is played superbly with the rest of the band filling in their bits perfectly. Their main set ended with one of the first Babyshambles single, 鈥淔*** Forever鈥 was played with the crowd still dancing and singing away in the hot Academy.

Libertines

With the night seemingly coming to a close there was one final treat in store for the crowd. Two special Libertines classics were about to be played. The first was 鈥淯p The Bracket鈥 taken off the first Libertines album with the same name. With the crowd singing along and all the old school Libertines fans pushing to the front to get a piece of the action.

The final song was my favourite. 鈥淐an鈥檛 Stand Me Now鈥 was played with great applause. The crowd went madder then they had throughout the night and the singing got even louder. On occasions they drowned out Pete鈥檚 vocals on stage. After the song had finished Babyshambles said a quick goodbye and left.

With the night over, the sweaty crowd left the Academy happy. It was a brilliant night and all my expectations were fulfilled. All the tales of forgetting gigs and late turn ups will never be forgotten, but this night is a great start point to continue in this fashion. Pete Doherty is back, and better then ever.

Hey yeah i agree some people just came to see Pete which was quite unfair on the rest of the band and yeah it is a shame that hes cancelled the rest of the tour.. lets hope he can get off the drugs though cos there is no doubt he is a brill musician

Steven
Kayley, No doubt about it, some of the fans there didn't really come to see "Babyshambles" They come to see "Pete Doherty"! Also Paul did go down and correct a mistake he made, which takes guts! Was a Good night, shame hes cancelled the rest of the tour tho

Kayley
Firstly, id like to say i think you potrayed babyshambles in the wrong light. They didn't try too hard as obviously the crowd were amazed by them as soon as they stepped onto the stage. Secondly, the Libs songs were what katie did and tiem for heroes as stated below. Thridly, they didn't play 'the man who came to stay' as I'm sure i would have realised being as it is one of my favourite babyshambles songs. Basically Pete and band were amazing.

James
Numero uno-Up the bracket was not played Numero duo-The man who came to stay was not played Numero tri-Cant stand me now 'Oh no i think youve got it the wrong way round'was not played-

Edd McGovern

I thought it was the best gig ever...Ive been a huge fan for ages and so waited fr 5 hours to get to the front this time as at Wolvo i was near the back. it was completely worth it because he shook my hand and he had my kewl neck tie in his pocket and also the pig-man puppent hand thing wich was well kewl...i still can't believe that he played Time for Heroes and i saw it. Its the best ive ever seen him perform and i cant wait for him to come back. =]
