Beyond fake news: Indian languages project

Videos depicting false images of child kidnappings went viral across India from 2017 and 2018. So how did the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ respond?

Published: 22 March 2020

People shared these videos, fearful for their children and their communities. Mobs unleashed terrible violence against innocent strangers wrongly accused of being child abductors. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ verified over 30 killings.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Audience research showed that sharing these and other untrue or unverified stories came from a multitude of motivations: from wanting to be good citizens, a sense of patriotism or even nationalism.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ responded with large conferences across India including a season of content challenging fake news with workshops and videos to help young people develop their critical thinking. This content has been created to help our Indian audiences to understand that they should check before they click and to pause and think before sharing on social media.
