South Yorkshire Police has objected to a proposal to allow a KFC restaurant to open 24 hours a day over concerns about drunken revellers.

The restaurant on West Street in Sheffield city centre is currently open until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

However, police have expressed concerns that due to its central location, extending the opening hours could lead to "potential issues with those in drink".

KFC said it would work closely with authorities to address all concerns raised.

Police want the fast food chain's restaurant to close between 05:00 and 07:00 each day.

“Our concerns centre around the proposal for 24-hour operation," the force wrote.

“With the premises being located on one of the busiest streets of the drinking circuit in the city centre and with similar establishments closing earlier, we feel there may be potential for higher levels of custom in the early hours leading to potential issues with those in drink."

Police said CCTV should be installed, which would be fitted and maintained by the force, the said.

A spokesperson for KFC said the firm was committed to being a responsible neighbour.

They said: “We will work closely with the local authorities to ensure they are satisfied that all concerns raised have been addressed.

"We will continue to work closely with the community in Sheffield to ensure KFC continues to be a positive addition to the local area in all respects.”

ChangingSheff, a group representing local residents, also objected to the plan.

Sheffield City Council’s licensing sub-committee is set to meet on Monday to discuss the application.
