My grandmother's first husband Corporal James Crathern was given this medal posthumously after World War One. He died on September 25 1915 at the Battle of Loos: a lot of Lincolnshire men lost there lives in that battle. He served with the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was about 27 years old, and only married a few weeks. They lived at Billinghay. The medal was given to all the soldiers, but a distant aunt only gave it to me last year. At the end of last year the parish council at Billinghay discovered some names had been missed off the war memorial, including James. They have now restored it and added the names of those who were missed. We discovered James was born in East London and was a carpenter. I've always wondered how he came to be in Lincolnshire but no one in the family can remember. (Alan Flintham)
