XR Barriers Research
Welcome to the online home of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ XR Barriers Project. A project to capture and document the barriers present in eXtended Reality environments
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ XR Barriers Project ran from early 2018 to mid 2020 and focused on collecting data on the barriers present in XR and how they impact users.
- View the barriers browser - View the 14 most common barriers grouped by impairment.
- View the presentations - View the overview and deep dive presentations and slides.
- View the deep dives - View deep dives into topics like switch control, performance and low vision adaptions.
- View the posters - View the posters we created to help the sessions go smoothly.
- View the gallery - View screenshots of the environment and the hardware used.
In order to capture as many barriers as possible, we worked with over 100 users across 15 sessions. In total we collected over 1700 observations. After de-duplication and analysis we identified 14 common barriers impacting users with motor, cognitive and vision impairments within XR experiences.
While solutions are not in scope for the project as a whole, it’s was often necessary to resolve some of the larger barriers in order for the smaller barriers to be observed. This led to a number of experiments and explorations around switch controls, performance and other challenges to ensure we could get a more complete picture.
